David Hockney journal

David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer and an important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.

His work is surreal and imaginative. His photography and paintings are both surreal in that his paintings are unusually colorful and vibrant. His photography is different from his paintings however, in that he makes photo montages of his photography, while his paintings are all one solid picture.

Interesting facts:

  • he worked as a medical orderly in hospitals during his National Service, 1957–1959
  • he is a staunch pro-tobacco campaigner
